Harry Potter, along with his best friends, Ron and Hermione, is about to start his third year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry can't wait to get back to school after the summer holidays. (Who wouldn't if they lived with the horrible Dursleys?) But when Harry gets to Hogwarts, the atmosphere is tense. There's an escaped mass murderer on the loose, and the sinister prison guards of Azkaban have been called in to guard the school.

In his third year at Hogwarts, Harry learns that Sirius Black, a dangerous prisoner, has escaped from Azkaban and is believed to be hunting him. The school is guarded by Dementors, soul-sucking creatures that terrify Harry more than anyone else. Meanwhile, Harry takes new classes, meets the enigmatic Professor Lupin, and begins uncovering secrets about his parents’ past.

The truth emerges: Sirius Black is not Harry’s enemy but his godfather, wrongly imprisoned for betraying Harry’s parents. The real traitor is Peter Pettigrew, who has been hiding as Ron’s pet rat. With the help of Hermione’s Time-Turner, Harry and Hermione go back in time to save Sirius from capture and a hippogriff named Buckbeak from execution. Though Sirius escapes, Harry gains hope of a family connection for the first time.
